Urological Association of Kerala UAK
The roots of Urology as a specialized field in Kerala trace back to the early 1960s, with pioneering efforts led by Dr. P.A. Abraham at Trivandrum Medical College and Dr. J. Samuel at Holy Cross Hospital, Kottiyam. These eminent figures are recognized as the founding fathers of Urology in the state.
By the late 1960s, dedicated Urology departments were established almost simultaneously across Kerala. Dr. David Joseph inaugurated the department in Trivandrum, Dr. Roy Chally in Calicut, and Dr. K.I. Kuriakose in Kottayam. A few years later, Dr. M.K. Joseph founded the Urology department in Alleppey. The departments flourished rapidly, with notable expansions led by Dr. K. Sasidharan and Dr. G.R. Bahuleyan Nair in Trivandrum, Dr. V.N. Bhat in Alleppey, and Dr. Y. Rafeek in Calicut.
The introduction of MCh programs in Urology further cemented the specialty’s growth. The first MCh program was introduced in Trivandrum in 1979, with Dr. Appu Thomas and Dr. K.R. Vikraman in the first batch. This was followed by the commencement of the program in Calicut in 1980, with Dr. M.T. Mohandas and Dr. A.C. Velayudhan as the first students. A few years later, the program was also initiated in Kottayam, with Dr. Balachandran as the first postgraduate trainee. These programs have since nurtured a cadre of highly skilled urologists who now practice advanced, high-tech Urology across all districts of Kerala.
Urological Association of Kerala (UAK)
The Urological Association of Kerala (UAK) was officially established in early 1983, with Dr. P.A. Abraham serving as its first President and Dr. K. Sasidharan as the Secretary. The inaugural meeting, organized by Dr. Augustine Komaranchath, was held at the Lotus Club in Cochin. Since its inception, UAK has consistently held Mid-term and Annual Conferences with dedication and punctuality.
In 1985, leadership transitioned to Dr. David Joseph, with Dr. K.M. Aniyan assuming the role of Secretary. The Association was formally registered under the Societies Registration Act on September 1, 1987, in Calicut. The first Annual General Body Meeting following the adoption of the Constitution took place on November 29, 1987, at Thevally, Quilon.
Through the years, UAK has continued to evolve under the guidance of esteemed Presidents and Secretaries, contributing significantly to the advancement of Urology in Kerala. The Association remains a vital force, fostering collaboration, education, and innovation within the Urological community in the state.
